After building the first wind farm in Victoria, the Codrington Wind Farm, Ernst has been representing NewEn, a renewable energy developer based in Bremen, Germany. NewEn then developed wind farms in western Victoria being Mortons Lane, Salt Creek and Dundonnell wind farms.

In addition to working in a range of industries including the energy sector, John has advised the Australian Government to instigate the RAN Submarine Project tender in the early 1980s and headed the teams that successfully tendered for the purchase of the Williamstown Naval Dockyard from the Australian Government.
